Learning Buddies Network is here for children who otherwise would not receive the academic support that they need.

Our Programmes

Currently, Learning Buddies Network offers two programmes: Reading Buddies and Math Buddies.

1. Reading Buddies

Elementary school students who struggle with reading are individually paired up with a local high school or university student. Learning buddies meet regularly in a classroom setting at the buddy’s school or nearby community centre. A designated site coordinator is present at all sessions and to assist in mentoring our buddies. Our tutors are trained in fundamentals of reading.

We follow a curriculum designed by Leah Wong, resource teacher at Renfrew School in Vancouver, who has a wealth of experience teaching our target population.  Leah has designed a tutor manual tailored specifically to our programme.

Emma Kim, an experienced tutor, coordinator and former LBN manager is our Reading Buddies Consultant and is responsible for the training of volunteers and the programme content.

The program is offered 3 times per year, twice during the school year and once during the summer time, July.

2. Math Buddies

Elementary school students who struggle with math are individually paired up with a local high school or university student. Math buddies meet regularly in a classroom setting at the buddy’s school or nearby community centre. A designated site coordinator is present at all sessions and to assist in mentoring our buddies.

We follow the Jump Math Curriculum, an innovative Canadian programme which is being increasingly used in BC schools.  As of the fall 2012, Jump Math has a new set of tutor guides specifically tailored for a tutor programme like ours.  Indeed, we will be piloting their programme and will work closely with the Jump Math developers who will assist in tutor training and guidance.

Wilfred Lau, an experienced tutor and coordinator, who has developed assessment tools and additional resources, is our math Buddies Consultant and is responsible for the training of volunteers and the programme content.

The program is offered 3 times per year, twice during the school year and once during the summer time, July.
