How to Stay Motivated with Summer Reading

With summer coming right around the corner, it may be hard to keep a consistent reading schedule. Here are some tips to stay motivated and on top of your reading lists during summer!

1. Read what you enjoy!

Whether it's for pleasure or knowledge, it's important that reading is fun and enjoyable. It shouldn’t feel like a chore or something to cross off your to-do list, and reading what you enjoy can help with that. Try finding a few genres that interest you so that you can explore books within that category.

This also means knowing when to stop a book when you don’t like it. Trying to power through a book can land you in a reading slump, which depletes motivation. If you find that you don’t like the book, stop and pick up another one.

2. Set a goal

By using a goal-setting app like Goodreads, you can track the number of books as well as which books you read. For many, working towards a goal is satisfying and rewarding, which can help you stay motivated to read! Additionally, Goodreads allows you to add friends, which can help keep you accountable.

3. Make it a routine

Allocating a time slot each day to read can help minimize procrastination. Whether it's 15 minutes before bed or 30 minutes after dinner, making reading part of your daily routine removes the hassle of finding time to read during your busy day.

4. Use technology to your advantage

Ebooks and audiobooks have become increasingly more popular and accessible, and they have many advantages. Say you’re busy traveling over the summer but don’t want to carry a stack of books: having a reading device like a Kindle can allow you to have access to millions of books in a small tablet-like device. Or for others, if audiobooks are better since you are an auditory learner, there are many apps such as Audible.
