How to Survive the First Day of School
It’s normal to feel nervous on the first day of school, regardless of what grade you are in. Nevertheless, try to remember that you are not alone and to breathe. Aim to just enjoy the moment that you are in, as time will fly by faster than one might think. I had just finished Grade 12 and am worried, yet excited, about entering university—a new chapter of my life. I’d imagine that it is the same sentiment for a kindergartener or a brand-new eighth grader. Even if you aren’t new to your school, there is always that sense of fear. Thus, here is some advice to help you get through the first day.
1. Make sure you sleep well
You should get a good night’s rest so you may wake up nice and early for the next day. This way, you’ll have enough time for breakfast, which can boost your energy and help you feel less sleepy. Try to eat a balanced meal rather than something sugary. Eggs, toast, avocado and milk are one idea for a more balanced meal as it has a variety of nutrients and food groups. There is a plethora of breakfast recipe ideas available on the internet, such as this one. If you have trouble falling asleep, try listening to a calming podcast (or even a boring one) to help you fall asleep. Perhaps drink some peppermint tea and read a book before bed. Experiment and see what works best for you.
2. Just be yourself and have fun
Don’t be shy to introduce yourself and make new friends. It can be daunting to make new friends and jump out of your comfort zone, but you may create long-lasting friendships by doing so. Even if you don't become close friends with that person, at least you made the effort to meet someone new.
3. Ask questions
Make sure to ask questions to the teachers and staff who are there to help you. They are there to teach you, so make them work hard and ask questions! It does not matter if you feel like your question does not make sense, as your goal should be to understand the material, benefit from your learning, and challenge yourself while having a growth mindset.
I hope that some of these tips will benefit you and put your mind at ease. Good luck going back to school and making the most of it!
