2021 LBN Scholarship Recipients
Nicholas Lee ($500)
Nick is a 5th year UBC student studying Microbiology & Immunology and Human Nutrition. Nick has been with LBN since 2016, volunteering first as a Mentor before becoming a Program Coordinator, as well as serving time on the Recruitment Committee and as a Regional Coordinator. One of his greatest takeaways from working with LBN has been watching others grow and become inspired, whether that's seeing my buddy master their arithmetic or reading techniques, to helping fellow mentors and volunteers recognize their impact and feel proud of their accomplishments in their roles. Nick hopes to pursue a career in Dentistry, where he aims to eliminate the gap in access to oral healthcare in marginalized communities, all while bringing a "smile" to people's faces. Nick is extremely honoured to have been chosen as a 2021 LBN Scholarship winner and would like to thank the LBN community for providing him with such amazing opportunities to grow in.
Kristofer Mah ($200)
Kris has been volunteering with the Learning Buddies Network since 2019. He is currently a Remote Executive Coordinator and previously served as a Math Mentor and Executive Coordinator at John Henderson Elementary School and MOSAIC Family Centre, respectively. Kris is currently studying in the Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia. He hopes to become a health care professional or secondary mathematics teacher after recognizing the prevalent role of education in society. In his free time, you can find Kris riding a bike at an indoor cycling studio, jamming out to the latest pop hits, or searching for the best strawberry ice cream in the lower mainland.
Kris is proud to be working with the Learning Buddies Network for its investment and commitment to youth development. Through his time, Kris has seen the positive lasting effects of the programs which include the development of confidence and character in both buddies and volunteers. He considers these outcomes to be the most rewarding aspect of the role which motivates him to continue to deliver a memorable experience for everyone. By providing academic support to families in need, Kris firmly believes that the Learning Buddies Network mission has the power to change and cultivate a better world of tomorrow.
Lily Li ($200)
Lily has volunteered with Learning Buddies Network from 2019 until spring of 2021 and served as Reading Mentor, Recruitment Committee Member, Reading Program Coordinator and Executive Coordinator. Witnessing the growth of both buddies and volunteer mentors has been a truly rewarding experience for her and she is honoured to be a part of it. Currently, Lily is attending the University of California, Los Angeles and hopes to pursue a major in psychology. In the future, Lily hopes to bridge gaps in education and destigmatize mental health across cultures.
