2024 LBN Scholarship Recipients
Sophie Choong ($200)
Sophie started volunteering with Learning Buddies in early 2021 as a mentor, and has volunteered as both a PC and an EC in online reading programs. Through LBN, she has been able to further her commitment to community service and mutual aid, especially for immigrant communities. Next year, she will be attending Boston University to double-major in Data Science and Sociology, with a minor in Public Health. Her experiences with buddies and mentors at LBN have demonstrated the connection between early childhood education, socialization and support networks, and positive health and social outcomes, and she hopes to bring this focus to an academic setting through research and public health seminars.
She is extremely thankful to LBN for its supportive and welcoming environment, ongoing connections with fellow volunteers, and opportunities for growth, and is honoured to receive a scholarship from the organization.
Flor Angela Diaz ($200)
As a student majoring in Biological Sciences with a minor in Psychology, I am about to begin my second year at the University of Alberta. Having made it to the Dean’s Honor Roll, I am dedicated to pursuing a career in healthcare and working diligently to provide care for those in need. Volunteering with LBN has been a meaningful opportunity to support youth in their educational journeys. In addition to my work with LBN, I enjoy tutoring high school students and volunteering at my university’s hospital. In my spare time, I love practicing calligraphy and trying out new bubble tea shops.
David Lee ($200)
I graduated with my bachelors in kinesiology from UBC in May of 2024. Currently I'm working as a practicing kinesiologist to provide holistic care for individuals through movement and physical activity. I coach individuals to lead a sustainably active lifestyle to help them reach their personal fitness goals.
I've been working with LBN since 2023, working in various roles such as executive coordinator and research assistant. LBN continues to provide opportunities for my personal and professional growth. The leadership skills I've learned while managing my own pods continue to help me navigate this new role and the community-focused philosophy that LBN strives for helped me immensely in finding my own community in rural BC.
I am honored to have been chosen to receive this scholarship and I am so thankful for all of the wisdom, guidance, and the support I have received from everyone at LBN. I'm looking forward to more fantastic adventures with LBN!
